Q&A

Why are you passionate about caring for older adults?

Cyrus Yau: As you know, more than 50% of our population are older adults, and it's really important to me that we take care of the patient as a whole. And from a personal standpoint, having taken care of my own parents in the hospital, it's important to make sure that everyone’s parents’ care is as good as it can be.

What’s one small change that can make a big difference in the care of older adults?

CY: I think something that could have a huge impact is polypharmacy in the hospital. Making sure that we tailor medication dosages and the types of medications we use for older adults will help reduce side effects like delirium and improve patient care.

What do you hope to achieve in the West Health Champions program?

CY: As medical director of the Hospitalist Program, I want to take a leadership role in advancing quality initiatives that have a direct and lasting impact on our hospitalized older adult population.
